Shockwave Therapy for ED

Most men suffering from erectile dysfunction have vascular problems affecting the vessels that supply blood to the cavernous bodies of the penis, resulting in a decreased ability to develop and maintain an erection. The end result is an inadequate blood-flow followed by premature draining of an already reduced amount of blood from the cavernous bodies, meaning an erection is not achieved. Shockwave Therapy for ED of this type can be a highly effective treatment.

Shockwaves Have Blood Vessel Stimulating Effects

Since 2005, Cardiologists have proven that shockwave technology works in stimulating the growth of new blood vessels, leading to an increased myocardial blood supply. The same shockwave therapy is now being used to similar effect on the blood vessels in the cavernous bodies of the penis. The shockwaves are focused onto the area to be treated creating new blood vessels in penile tissue, enabling patients to achieve and maintain firm spontaneous erections.

Traditional ED Treatment (using drugs) vs ED Shockwave Therapy (combined therapy)

About Shockwave Treatment for ED

The treatment involves low-intensity shockwaves (similar to ultrasound waves) being transmitted onto the treatment area on the patient’s body. These shockwaves accelerate the body’s self- healing process, stimulating the treated tissues to grow new micro blood vessels, resulting in improved erection performance. Although the use of shockwaves to treat ED is quite new, shockwaves have a history in medicine going back several decades.

Based in Switzerland, STORZ Medical AG was founded in 1987 as part of the STORZ Group of companies. Their physicians and engineers are focused on the development and improvement of Shockwave technology, especially in treating ED and sexual impotence.

Shockwave Therapy for ED Review

Please take a look at our short informative video featuring our Consultant Nurse, Mrs Gayle Maffulli, explaining and demonstrating the procedure to one of our satisfied patients, David.  In turn, David describes his own review of shockwave therapy for ED.

The clinic is pleased to post our new video – “Shockwave Therapy for ED Reviews”. Previously we had resisted the idea because we were wary of the often negative impact paid celebrity endorsements can have. Also, we knew that most patients would quite naturally be reluctant to be filmed. Then along came David. Delighted with the results of his ed shock wave therapy, he kindly offered to appear in our video. He wasn’t motivated by money but by a wish to assist other men by shedding light on his own experience. This is something not many of us would have had the courage to do. Thank you, David.

Shockwave Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction Testimonials

Further testimonials to the success of our shock wave treatment for ED appear below. You will see that our linear shockwave therapy has been particularly successful in treating erectile dysfunction of vascular or diabetic origin.

As a type one diabetic for 30 years, most of them a young foolish diabetic, life caught up with me. Many side effects, including ED, started taking their toll on me. Yet I still ignored it, until the birth of my child.
I completely changed my lifestyle, I changed the way I ate, stopped drinking, took up exercise and yoga and completely transformed my life, and even reversed some of the damage I'd done previously. Including sciatic nerve problems, stress headaches and trigger finger to name but a few.
However, the ED issue was always there in the background, it's not life threatening, but it has a huge effect on your life, relationships and general confidence. Once it starts to effect you it's a downward spiral. I wouldn't entertain the idea of entering into a relationship, and came to the conclusion that something needed to change.
That's when I turned to The Harley Street Men's Clinic, they were professional, knowledgeable, discreet and gave great support.
Today I find myself six months into a healthy, sexually active relationship with a completely supportive partner, and that's the best result I could ever have wished for. The Clinic changed my life, and I'm truly grateful.

'Shock Wave' Treatment for ED -

I had gradually worsening ED symptoms since the end of 2014. My local GP suggested pills which helped sometimes (not always when I wished it would) and it definitely wasn't the miracle fix that I always thought it might be. I had begun to think that maybe, this is it. I am in my early sixties. I have had an active sex life with my wife for over 40 years. Is this to be expected? The trouble was I still had the desire and It began to get me down. I felt like I was letting my wife down. She even questioned if I still desired her. We still had a sex life. I could still reach orgasm when aroused if not through penetration. We all know there are other ways but it's not the same.
I came across this treatment when browsing the internet and felt this was a chance to try something. I was given an appointment really quickly. My first appointment included a consultation with a doctor who explained lots of things and put my mind at ease. My wife came with me and was included in the conversations. I was given a lengthy questionnaire which both my wife and I answered between us. I felt my problem affected us both so it seemed natural for both of us to see this through together. I was surprised to be told I could start my first treatment session straight away.
Gayle Maffulli carried out the treatment. She showed me the equipment and explained a few things. After the initial embarrassment, on no occasion was I made to feel uncomfortable. The procedure lasts 20 minutes and is painless. I can only describe it as a pulsing sensation. My wife also came in with me where we all chatted happily and didn't feel awkward at all.
After the first session the one thing that felt different was my state of mind. I felt optimism for the first time in 18 months. After three sessions I was surprised to notice a vein on my penis that wasn't there before. I knew it helped with the blood flow but I definitely didn't expect visual proof!
I finished the six sessions last week and we are very, very pleased with the result. I do get hard erections after little stimulation. My penis appears thicker than before and I am not taking any pills. I have no idea how long this will last but I know I can always have more treatment if needed. I would encourage anyone who has the same problem to give this a try. Life's too short not to try new things.
We would like to thank Gayle and everyone at the Harley Street Men's clinic for putting the intimacy back into our marriage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Shockwave Therapy differ from other ED treatments?

Most other therapies involve the continuing use of medication, or invasive treatments such as injections and implants, whereas shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment which triggers a natural mechanism that cures vascular-related ED problems rather than just treating the symptoms.

What is the procedure?

There will be an initial consultation at our Harley Street Clinic, which involves a thorough physical examination as well as a comprehensive screening to assess whether patients are suitable for shockwave treatment. Once this has been determined, the patient will be given four short therapy sessions lasting approximately 30 minutes each over a four-week period.

Where does it take place?

The treatments are performed in one of our discreet, private consulting rooms, with only the therapist being present.

What preparation is necessary?

A patient does not need to make any changes to their daily routine prior to the session, as the treatment is non-invasive. No anaesthesia or sedation is needed, and the patient will not be required to wear a gown.

Is it Painful?

The treatment is pain-free and patients may only feel a tingling sensation, not unlike pins and needles.

How safe is Shockwave Therapy for ED?

There are no reported side-effects during or after the therapy, and the treatment is proven to be safe. Patients can carry on with their normal activities immediately following each treatment session.

Who will benefit from ED Shockwave treatment?

Most patients suffering from vasculogenic (i.e. disorder or dysfunction of the blood vessels) ED or diabetes are ideal candidates for treatment. The treatment is patient-friendly, has no side-effects and can be used for all patients, even those on anticoagulants. There is no age barrier in treating ED (research states that 50% of men over 70 are still having regular sex), although the prevalence of ED does increase with age. The sooner a patient seeks treatment for ED from medical specialists, the better the outcome will be.

Is the Treatment Effective?

Early indications are that the treatment improves the quality of erections in over 70% of patients with vasculogenic ED or diabetes.

When will you see Results?

Patients have reported noticeable improvements within three weeks of beginning the course.

Shockwave Therapy for ED Research & Clinical Studies

There is an increasing body of clinical research supporting the effectiveness of shockwave therapy for the treatment of vascular related ED.

Shockwave treatment of erectile dysfunction

LI-ESWT is a revolutionary treatment of ED, and probably possesses unprecedented qualities that can rehabilitate erectile tissue. The clinical improvement in subjective erectile function together with the significant improvement in penile hemodynamics following LI-ESWT confirm that LI-ESWT has unique properties that may create a new standard of care for men with ED.

Can low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy improve erectile dysfunction?

This placebo-controlled study over 5 weeks shows that 57% of the men who suffered from erectile dysfunction had an effect from LI-ESWT. After 24 weeks, seven (19%, active group) and nine (23%, active placebo group) men were still able to have intercourse without medication. This study shows a possible cure in some patients, but more research, longer follow-up in the placebo group and an international multicentre randomized study are needed.

Low intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction

Significant increases in the duration of erection and penile rigidity, and significant improvement in penile endothelial function were demonstrated. Ten men did not require any PDE5-I therapy after 6-mo follow-up. No pain was reported from the treatment and no adverse events were noted during follow-up.

Low-intensity Extracorporeal shockwave therapy improves erectile dysfunction

In a review 14 studies of men who received low-intensity extracorporeal shock wave treatment (LI-ESWT) for erectile dysfunction (ED), there was evidence that these men experienced improvements in their ED following LI-ESWT.

Low intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction

LI-ESWT demonstrated a positive long term clinical effect with improvement in erectile function of Indian men with vasculogenic ED who were prior responders to PDE5i therapy. The efficacy and tolerability of this treatment, coupled with its long term benefits and rehabilitative characteristics, make it an attractive new therapeutic option for men with vasculogenic erectile dysfunction.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy for the Treatment of Peyronie’s Disease

After 12 wk, mean VAS score, mean IIEF-5 score, and mean Quality of Life score ameliorated significantly in patients receiving ESWT. In patients with Peyronie’s Disease, ESWT leads to pain resolution and ameliorates both Erection Function and Quality of Life.

Contraindications to Erectile Dysfunction Shockwave Therapy

While shockwave therapy is suitable for most men suffering from erectile dysfunction, there are some conditions or contraindications that means shockwave is not an option.

Shockwave therapy for ED is unsuitable in the following circumstances:

    • You have implanted cardiac stents, heart valves or a pacemakers.
    • If you are haemophiliac or on anticoagulant therapy (e.g. blood-thinners).
    • You have a malignant tumour present at the treatment site.
    • You have an infection or skin abrasion at the treatment site
    • If you have been advised not to undertake sexual intercourse, e.g. following a Myocardial infarction (heart attack) and/or cardiac surgery.
    • If you suffer from nerve damage depriving your penis of sensation, shockwave therapy is unlikely to be beneficial until that issue is resolved.
    • You are under 18.

This list is not exhaustive and we describe the reasons for contraindications to shockwave therapy for ED in more detail elsewhere.

Please note that assessment by an expert practitioner is always necessary. We know from experience there are certain treatments, conditions and individual histories that are likely respond better or worse to shockwave therapy for ED. However, as an ethical provider, we look at the safety first in every assessment.
