Does Viagra increase the risk of skin cancer?

National press such as the Daily Star recently reported on links between Viagra and skin cancer.

We’ve seen a lot of scaremongering in recent months regarding this issue and whether there is a possible correlation between Melanoma diagnoses in men and their use of modern medications for Erectile Dysfunction.  While scientific data appears to have cleared these ‘little blue pills’ of any blame, the publicity surrounding the concerns has highlighted a little talked about issue that affects a large proportion of men in later life, and one which can cause a great deal of worry, stress and indeed embarrassment.

We already know that the use of Viagra and other such medication does not work for everyone, and there are potentially dangerous side effects that can cause long term damage and health issues for some patients, which is something everyone is always keen to avoid. Sadly the media hype surrounding the effectiveness of such medications can often overshadow the fact that for some men, these drug treatments for ED cause more of a problem than they provide a solution and it’s often left to the individual to weigh up the pros and cons of any kind of treatment… and if the patient is too embarrassed to discuss the issue with his GP, then he is left at the mercy of internet shamans peddling snake oil medications

The causes of erectile dysfunction are numerous and it is often totally impossible to pin down a single culprit.  Some men suffer due to underlying medical conditions such as Type II Diabetes, Heart Disease, or Parkinsons.  Sometimes the condition is linked to lifestyle choices such as poor diet and obesity, overuse of alcohol or other drugs such as painkillers. Sometimes it is a side effect of certain medications used to treat depression or hayfever for instance. Sometimes it is psychological and performance anxiety can exacerbate the situation making it even worse.

Whatever the cause, it is always enormously stressful and can lead to breakdowns in relationships, poor mental health and psychological problems for the men affected.
